A Brief History.

DESCRIPTION

In the 18th and 19th centuries Outbuildings were commonly known as “dependencies”. These were often accessory buildings that served a variety of functions and were thoughtfully designed to complement and enhance the architecture of the lot and surrounding community. Dependencies were often found in estate and plantation landscapes throughout Virginia and Maryland, notably in the regions of Williamsburg and Annapolis. They were designed and crafted with a surprising level of detail which is an enduring part of their appeal. Today, the word ‘outbuildings’ is used by the construction, insurance, real estate and architecture/design professions, to encompass a broad array of free-standing independent structures that exist on either a residential or commercial property.

The work at our company is inspired and informed by the architectural and cultural history of outbuildings. While uses of our outbuildings are decidedly different from time past, what was versatile in design then remains versatile in design today. A cottage then is still a cottage today, but can also be used as a pool house or studio. On the other hand, there are not many needs today for a smokehouse or a privy. Like many of the original 18th century dependency buildings, some of which still stand today, ours are designed and built with materials to endure and withstand years of use and exposure to the harsh weather elements. Of course, like then, periodic care and maintenance is required to ensure longevity.
